What is the EVO ICL?

If you have been considering vision correction or LASIK eye surgery this lens implant might just be what you need. The EVO ICL, developed by STAAR Surgical is an Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), also known as an Implantable Contact Lens. The EVO ICL is implanted in the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens to correct nearsightedness that ranges from -3.00 diopters to -20.00 diopters. Patients experience high definition vision and describe their new vision as crisp and clear.

EVO ICL Candidates

Anyone who is nearsighted (myopic) and interested in vision correction surgery could be a good candidate for phakic IOLs. So, if you cannot see in the distance or far away you would be nearsighted. For optimal safety and best results, patients should not have a history of ophthalmic surgery or diseases such as iritis, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. After a thorough medical examination of the eyes and an evaluation of the patient’s vision history the doctor will determine whether or not this treatment is appropriate. The ideal EVO ICL candidates will have between -3 to -20 diopters of myopia and enough room between their eye’s natural crystalline lens and iris to accommodate the lens implant.

Requirements for the EVO ICL

Individuals who suffer from extreme nearsightedness will have a solution for their poor vision. The EVO ICL also provides an opportunity to those individuals who are not candidates for LASIK eye surgery. Some people cannot have LASIK for reasons ranging from high prescriptions to thin corneas. The EVO ICL will now give these patients the opportunity to experience the same lifestyle change that LASIK has brought to millions.

What happens during the EVO ICL procedure?

Prior to the EVO ICL eye surgery, an ophthalmic eye surgeon will make two microscopic holes in the iris. Your eye will be numbed with a light, topical or local anesthetic. Once the eye is numbed the surgeon will make 2 side port incisions and one main temporal incision that is critical to the insertion process. Next the surgeon will insert the EVO ICL through the main temporal incision and place the lens behind the iris and in front of the crystalline lens. This insertion procedure is typically performed one eye at a time. There is very little discomfort and normally no pain associated with the procedure. Some drops or perhaps oral medication may be prescribed, and a visit is usually scheduled the day after surgery. Patients will be advised to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery

How does the EVO ICL give super clear vision?

Quality of Visual Excellence – High Definition Vision
The EVO ICL offers vision correction that’s sharper, clearer, more vivid, and has greater depth and dimension than other procedures. The main advantage of the EVO ICL over traditional corrective laser eye surgery is that patients may experience significant improvement in quality of vision after the lens is implanted. When compared to the results of corneal refractive surgery, the EVO ICL may produce superior vision quality as evidenced by fewer higher order aberrations. Patients experience a nearly immediate visual recovery and “Wow!” results.

After the EVO ICL Procedure. What is recovery like?

After the EVO ICL is implanted, patients will likely only need a day or two for recovery, with little to no side effects. Noticeable vision improvement will occur almost right away. The lens remains invisible to others due to its position behind the iris.

The patient will need to return to the surgeon’s office the next day so that the results of the procedure can be evaluated. While the lens is meant to be kept in place for permanent vision correction, it can be removed if necessary. It can also be replaced with an updated lens if significant vision changes occur after the implantation. Patients will still be able to wear reading glasses for presbyopia after this procedure as well.
