The Crystalens is the only accommodating intraocular lens available. It works by having flexible hinges off the optical part of the lens to allow the optics to move back and forth with eye muscle movement. This new laser vision surgery technology is designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus on distant, middle, and near objects. Used in conjunction with standard cataract extraction methods, Crystalens was designed to provide a continuous range of vision, from distance to intermediate to reading vision without total dependence on glasses or contact lenses. PRK may be a better procedure than LASIK for some patients. In PRK no corneal flap is created, as in LASIK. Instead, some of the corneal epithelium, (the top layer of cornea) is first removed before the same excimer laser is used to reshape a microscopic amount of corneal tissue below the surface, correcting the refractive error. Over several days, the top layer of the cornea regrows. At the 20/20 Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana's PRK provider, our surgeons are also experienced in PRK and perform the procedure with the same VISX S4-IRâ„¢ laser used for LASIK.
LASIK is an outpatient surgical procedure that uses a cool laser beam of light that gently reshapes the surface of the cornea with no discomfort to improve vision. The beam gently pulses to remove a microscopic amount of tissue, allowing images to be more sharply focused on the retina. In some cases after cataracts surgery, vision may still be blurred by varying degrees of astigmatism, an oblong football shape to the cornea, or lens of the eye. Toric lens technology to reduce the effects of astigmatism has been applied to glasses and contact lenses for years. Now this corrective technology is also available in Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implants. When evaluating your LASIK eye surgery in Visalia, Dr. Sunalp can assess if you would benefit from Toric IOL after your cataracts surgery.
The clouding of the eye's natural lens, called a cataract, is an unfortunate fact of life that occurs with age. Cataract patients have had the option of improving vision with cataract surgery for some time, but there used to be many limitations. Traditionally, cataract patients would have their natural lens replaced with a single vision implant, allowing patients improved far vision, but requiring them to use glasses for other distances. Now cataract patients can choose an accommodative lens implant called Crystalens to improve vision.
