PROCEDURES OFFERED AT CLEAR ADVANTAGE

Depending on your vision correction needs, Clear Advantage will educate you on the best choices available to accomplish the highest visual results. During your evaluation, we will not only evaluate the overall health of your eye, but we will learn about you and your lifestyle. During your evaluation you may learn about:

LASIK – Laser assisted in-situ Keratomileusis: combines the proven techniques of both corneal flap and excimer laser surgery, resulting in dramatic results and rapid visual recovery. LASIK is effective for correcting most cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Read more about LASIK.

PRK - Photorefractive Keratectomy: PRK was the first laser refractive surgery approved by the FDA and has been performed for over 15 years. PRK differs from LASIK in that no flap of tissue is created prior to resculpting the cornea with the excimer laser. This makes PRK a good option for patients whose corneas may be too thin for LASIK or have a curvature that might make creating a flap unsafe. PRK may also be a better treatment for patients with moderately dry eyes. Creation of a corneal flap with LASIK induces a temporary dry eye, which can worsen a pre-existing dry eye. Since PRK doesn't involve creating a corneal flap, there is generally quicker recovery with respect to dry eye. PRK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
PRK is a safe, viable alternative to LASIK for many patients. Clear Advantage uses the same Technolas 217z excimer laser to perform PRK and LASIK and our pre-operative evaluation is identical as for LASIK including the use of Zywave wavefront sensing technology. Read more about PRK.

Zyoptix Customized LASIK - Your eye and vision are like your fingerprint - truly distinctive and personal. They are distinctive because light is scattered unevenly to form a pattern that is unique to your eye and because your cornea has a unique shape. Bausch & Lomb's Zyoptix system involves an extra diagnostic (screening) process extensive enough to let the surgeon see every individual patient's unique optical characteristics. After a Zyoptix assessment, your surgeon has a broad base of information to decide whether your eyes are suitable for treatment, and how to plan that treatment for you. Wavefront measurement and custom Zyoptix treatments have proven to yield better results in the quality of vision for many individuals. Read more about Zyoptix Customized Lasik.

CRYSTALENS - Lens replacement for Near, Intermediate and Distance vision correction – Crystalens is a single-focus lens made from a proprietary and specially formulated solid silicone. Crystalens is a replacement lens that works naturally with your eye muscles and is designed to allow the lens to move, or accommodate to focus seamlessly on objects near, far and all distances in-between. We can implant this lens on patients with or without cataracts, and on patients over 50 years of age who desire uncorrected near, intermediate and distance vision. Read more about Crystalens.

THE LASIK PROCEDURE

During the LASIK, PRK and Zyoptix procedure a series of numbing drops are placed in the eye. This makes LASIK a virtually pain free procedure. Once the eye is numbed, a lid holder is placed on the eye, which prevents the eye from blinking. At this point, the microkeratome, a highly precise instrument that creates a protective layer on the cornea is placed onto the eye. This is done with a suction pressure that will feel like a slight squeeze on the eye. The suction also causes the vision in the eye to dim. You won't see anything during this part of the procedure because the other eye is covered. A protective layer is created, called a corneal flap, which is gently moved out of the way exposing the inner tissue of the cornea. The laser, under computer and surgeon control, will then be activated for short intervals, reshaping the cornea. Typically, actual laser treatment time is less than one minute per eye.

Many patients are concerned with eye movements during treatment. Patients will be directed to watch a blinking red light during treatment in an effort to minimize movement.  The Technolas 217z excimer laser has an infrared eye tracking system that will monitor your eye position. The tracker keeps the treatment centered for small, natural eye movements and will stop laser treatment if too much movement is detected.

LASIK has virtually no recovery time.  After the surgery, patients are advised to go home and “rest” their eyes for the remainder of the day.  They are supplied with eye drops to keep the eye clean and moist and goggles and sunglasses are supplied to help protect the eyes from being rubbed.  The day after surgery, most patients can drive themselves in for their 1-day follow up appointment, and most patient return to work immediately after!
