Perhaps you’ve been told at some point that you were not a good candidate for LASIK because your cornea is too thin. With traditional LASIK methods, the laser eye surgeon can only calculate treatment based on the depth of the incision made by the microkeratome. However, with a laser, the surgeon can create an extremely precise and uniform flap that can be significantly thinner than previously possible with a microkeratome. This allows for more tissue for treatment and greater safety to the patient.

Considered one of the top surgeons nationally, Dr. N. Timothy Peters has recently accepted the role of Clinical Consultant for Bausch & Lomb. Having already completed several clinical studies for Bausch & Lomb, Allergan, and Alcon, Dr. Peters has been providing research data to the FDA in an effort to assist Bausch & Lomb with developing new and beneficial advancements for technologies and custom hyperopic procedures. Additionally, based on his reputation and field expertise, Dr. Peters has been invited to speak at numerous national ophthalmic conferences; the most recent being on the DaVinci bladeless LASIK system at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in April 2008.
UNH Has Won a National Marketing Competition for Bausch & Lomb, Earning the School a $3,000 Award
Students of UNH's Whittemore School of Business and Economics' marketing workshop class worked all semester developing a marketing plan to convince students and faculty on campus to try laser eye surgery in a competition for Bausch & Lomb.
Four of the class' 24 students presented their marketing plan at Bausch & Lomb headquarters in late may and ended up walking away winners. The victory was the culmination of a semester's worth of work during which students tested out many of the marketing practices they had only read of previously.
"I think the thing they like the most is the freedom to create marketing programs and then to execute them and see if they work," marketing workshop instructor Peter Masucci said. "Until you actually do it, you don't get a sense of how these things actually work." Students worked with laser eye surgery provider Clear Advantage Vision Correction Center in Portsmouth, which uses Bausch & Lomb products, to drive business to the center.
Many consider laser eye surgery to be mainly for older folks, and students faced an uphill challenge convincing peers that the surgery can benefit young people who qualify, too, said Jenna Vocci, who was one of the four to go to Rochester, N.Y.
Students decided to hold a "Vision Olympics" on the lawn in front of UNH's Thompson Hall where students played a variety of games first using vision impairing glasses and then without. The demonstration was meant to show students how much vision correction can help.
The games ended up being a resounding success with many students showing up to a later question and answer session on laser eye surgery. Eventually four students went through with the vision correcting procedure, and more are still coming in for the initial evaluation.
Students in the class also created an unmistakable balloon display that included a large balloon with two smaller balloons on it that looked like eyes, said Masucci, an adjunct professor of marketing. He said strings attached to the balloons included little bits of information for passersby, such as saying that laser eye surgery recovery takes only 24 hours.
"The eyeball balloons were very, very catchy because you can't miss them," he said. The innovative "Vision Olympics" and eyeball balloons were a hit with the Bausch & Lomb executives and propelled the students past teams from California, Texas and South Carolina.
Although students themselves didn't receive any award money, Vocci said the know-how they picked up in the process was worth it. "When you're looking for jobs a lot of people find that really valuable experience," she said. — Foster's Daily Democrat, June 2007
