Payment Options

The cost of laser eye surgery can vary widely depending on the area of the country in which LASIK is performed and the degree of your refractive error. It is important to remember that you should not base your choice of a LASIK surgeon solely on the cost of LASIK eye surgery.  A less skilled ophthalmologist may charge less for LASIK, but he or she may not have the same experience, training, or precise equipment as a more expensive doctor.

Although a higher price does not necessarily guarantee the best care, many experts recommend avoiding discount laser eye surgery centers with aggressive advertising campaigns.

Be aware of hidden costs and be sure that your price includes:

• A complete evaluation with preoperative tests to determine candidacy for refractive surgery. This should include an assessment of your pupil size, corneal thickness, Orbscan topography, and wavefront scan.  It is important that your evaluation include a complete undilated and dilated exam. 
• Refractive surgery on both eyes for LASIK, Zyoptix customized LASIK or Crystalens.
• All post-operative care for 1 year. This includes follow up appointments after surgery (1-day, 1-week, 1-month, 3-months and 1-year).

• Unplanned occurrences after surgery should also be covered through your fees.  Examples include dry eye treatments such as punctual plugs or post surgical complications such as epithelial ingrowth.

• Post operative care often covers the cost for care at your current optometrist, if you prefer.  Over 150 optometrists in New England currently belong to our co-management program.  We would be delighted to speak with your doctor if he/she is interested in participating.

• Enhancements, if necessary, within the first year LASIK and Zyoptix patients.

INTEREST FREE FINANCING & EXTENDED PAYMENT PLANS

"FLEXIBLE SPENDING" OR "CAFETERIA" PLANS
Many employers offer a flexible spending account (FSA) or cafeteria plan that sets aside pre-tax dollars from your paycheck for medical expenses not covered by insurance. For most companies' plans, LASIK is a qualified procedure that is eligible for reimbursement. Contact your HR department for more details regarding your company's guidelines and open enrollment periods. Flexible spending accounts can make laser vision correction even more affordable.

How it works
Money set aside in an FSA escapes both federal and state income tax and also social security tax. By law, the maximum amount you can contribute to an FSA is $5,000, but most companies limit contributions to $2,000 or $3,000.

FSA’s are not just a savings account. They save you money by decreasing the amount of taxes you pay. For instance, if you make $35,000 per year and pay 16% Federal Tax; 6% State Tax, and 7.65% FICA Tax, your total payroll taxes would be $10,377. However, if you contribute $3,000 to your FSA you would pay the same percent of taxes on only $32,000 per year. This would give you net savings of approximately $900. The higher your tax bracket, the more you save.

If you have an FSA but do not have adequate funds available to cover surgery this year, know that the IRS has approved a limited carryover of FSA balances for up to two months and 15 days after the end of the account year. That means, for example, you could use 2006 allocated dollars up to March 15, 2007.
