"Flexible Spending" or "Cafeteria" Plans

Check with your employer or Human Resource department to find out if your organization offers Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Healthcare Financing Accounts (HAS) or cafeteria plans.  These special programs set aside pre-tax dollars from your paycheck for medical expenses not covered by insurance. Since LASIK is a medical procedure, it is considered  for reimbursement.

How it Works

Money set aside in an FSA escapes both federal and state income tax and also social security tax. By law, the maximum amount you can contribute to an FSA is $5,000, but some companies limit contributions to $2,000 or $3,000.

FSA's/HSA's are not just a savings account. They save you money by decreasing the amount of taxes you pay. For instance, if you make $35,000 per year and pay 16% Federal Tax; 6% State Tax, and 7.65% FICA Tax, your total payroll taxes would be $10,377. However, if you contribute $3,000 to your FSA you would pay the same percent of taxes on only $32,000 per year. This would give you net savings of approximately $900. The higher your tax bracket, the more you save.

If you have an FSA but do not have adequate funds available to cover surgery this year, know that the IRS has approved a limited carryover of FSA balances for up to two months and 15 days after the end of the account year. That means, for example, you could use 2007 allocated dollars up to March 15, 2008.

• Insurance Discounts – insurance does not "cover" the cost of corrective vision services, but many have started offering discounts through various LASIK centers.  If we are not currently contracted with your insurance or vision provider for a discount, we will honor most discounts offered through other practices.  We currently offer discounts for Blue Cross, Matthew Thornton, Anthem, VSP, MVP, Davis, Aetna, Spectera, United Health, HealthAllies, NEI, Cole and GM/Delphi...just to name a few.  If you have medical or vision insurance, call our office to find out your discount.

• Family Discounts – Learn how to save 15% if 2 or more family members have corrective vision services within one year. Family members include spouses, siblings, parents, in-laws and children.

• Medical and Military Discounts – Are you employed in the medical field? Do you serve in the armed forces? We offer a sizeable discount for medical professionals or for those serving in the armed forces.

• Corporate Charter Program – Is your organization enrolled in our Corporate Charter Program? Enrollment is free for you and your employer. Ask your Human Resources or Benefit Administrator to contact our office for enrollment information today. You and your fellow colleagues could save 20%!
